7 Common On-Site Problems (and the Supplies That Solve Them)

No matter how well a job is planned, working on-site often means dealing with unexpected problems. From the wrong PPE to missing tools, even small issues can lead to big delays, especially when working towards a tight deadline.

However, many of the most common on-site problems can be either solved or avoided with the right supplies and a bit of planning. Here, we share seven common on-site problems and the practical supplies that can help solve them quickly and efficiently.

1. Stripped screws

Screws that strip during installation are frustrating and time-consuming to remove, especially when they’re in awkward or tight spaces.

Carry a screw extractor set as part of your toolkit. These enable you to safely remove stripped or damaged screws without negatively impacting the surrounding surfaces. Also, invest in high-quality bits to prevent stripping screws in the first place.

2. Dropped or lost driver bits

If you’re halfway up a ladder and the only bit that fits your fixing has gone missing or disappeared into the rubble, this can delay how quickly you can complete the task.

Keep a bit belt or magnetic bit holder attached to your tool belt, so you always have backups available when you need them.

3. Missing or damaged PPE

No gloves, broken safety glasses, or missing hard hats can stop work completely and create safety violations when not addressed.

Keep a PPE box in your van or tool locker with essential PPE spares, including gloves, eye protection, earplugs, hi-vis vests, and masks. Having these extras on hand can keep everyone compliant and safe when things get damaged or go missing.

4. Poor visibility in low-light areas

Dim site lighting or awkward corners make it difficult to work safely or precisely.

A rechargeable head torch or portable LED light can make working in poor lighting conditions far easier. Choose models with magnetic bases or tripods for hands-free use in tight spaces. Another solution is a rope light of LEDs, offering a flexible and adaptable lighting solution for any space.

5. Struggling with dense materials

Standard drill bits or blades can wear out quickly or fail when working with dense materials like steel, tile, or hardwood.

Stock up on specialised bits and blades for tougher jobs, such as carbide-tipped masonry bits, diamond core bits for tile, or bi-metal saw blades. They last longer and reduce the risk of tool failure when you’re in the middle of a task.

6. Wasted time searching for small parts

Screws, plugs, and washers always seem to be hiding at the bottom of a toolbox or are left behind in the van, meaning wasted time while you search for them.

Use stackable, labelled organisers or magnetic trays to keep everything organised and within reach. Some people also like to use toolbox foam inserts or drawer dividers for quick visibility of small parts.

7. Incomplete fixing kits

You’re on-site and realise your fixing kit is missing key screws, wall plugs, or brackets.

Always keep an emergency fixings kit in the van and stock it with a variety of wall plugs, screws, bolts, washers, brackets, and adhesives so you always have what you need. Remember to top this up as you use things, so you’re never stuck without what you need.

While no site is perfect, the most common on-site issues can be tackled with careful preparation and the right materials. By keeping your kit stocked with these time-saving essentials, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress, time, and multiple trips to buy supplies.
